Biography: The Reverend David Gillentine:
David Gillentine was raised in Northern California, Texas and Hawaii. His father was a Southern Baptist Minister. He is the middle of five sons; three of them are gay. David received Christ as Savior and was baptized by his father at age eight. David came out in Hawaii in 1970 and discovered MCC in Sacramento, California in August of 1973. He responded to God’s call to the ministry in 1975, and was sent to lead the MCC in Stockton in 1976, while he was still an Exhorter (this is the old name for MCC’s Student Clergy). He was licensed into UFMCC ministry in August of 1977, remaining in Stockton until 1979.
In late 1979, he was called to be Pastor of the small MCC in Fresno. When he arrived, there were four voting members. David pastored that church for more than six years and left it a growing ministry of thirty members. David lived in Fresno more than ten years, working with the developmentally disabled population that entire time. David still has a great love for these “Special” folks.
In 1990, David was asked to be Assistant Pastor in MCC of the Pomona Valley. The pastor resigned after David was there 22 days. Ultimately, he was elected the pastor and served there until January of 1997. The Rev. Beau McDaniels asked David to consider the Associate Pastor position here at MCC Las Vegas. He came for Martin Luther King weekend and knew right away it was “The Right Place.” David and his partner, Dwayne Rothenbuehler, moved here in March of 1997, bringing tabby-cat Pharaoh and poodle Paddington in tow. David and Dwayne have been together since June of 1991 and had a Holy Union in October of 1993.
David’s MCC Las Vegas duties fill a wide range. He leads the Children’s Ministry Program. He is our AIDS Minister, representing us at area HIV-AIDS groups and meetings, specifically, the Coalition and AIDS Interfaith Ministry (AIM: the group that sponsors the annual World AIDS Day Vigil). He administers our Benevolence Fund, those monies set aside to assist those in need. David conducts most of the Holy Unions here, more than 20 in the last annual report. He is the primary teacher for Membership Classes. He is in the office during office hours, except for meetings that call him elsewhere. He leads the Wednesday Evening Study Group. Drop by and join in and listen to what the group is studying. The Rev. Gillentine is passionate about sharing the love of Christ Jesus. He is committed to inclusive language. He is ready to grow with this church as we reach out into our community as never before. David’s first sermon here was “Come and See!” That’s still a theme for him: Come and see what God is doing here!
